I agree some of the games are in your words “poppy cartoonie”, but that is the appeal of Nintendo, they encompass all age groups, the Wii, with its controller expands on this. Also, Nintendo has always been about gameplay – unfortunately Sony and MS simply don't have many titles that match the sheer addictiveness of these 'cartoonie' games. They are more about photo-realism, in other words eye-candy. Impressive graphics can only go so far, eventually you get bored as the games are generally empty.

There are signs that Nintendo are on to something and have caught the attention of people who are real game players, rather than polygon-chasers!:

“The Wii outsold the rival PlayStation 3 by more than double in the US in November, according to industry tracking group NPD, which estimates that Nintendo sold 476,140 of its Wii consoles against Sony's 196,580 PS3s.”
